BHI was established by the NSW Government in 2009 following the Garling Special Commission of Inquiry into Acute Care Services in NSW Public Hospitals.
BHI's primary focus is to deliver timely, accurate and comparable information on the performance of the NSW public healthcare system.
In 2011 it was confirmed in the NSW Health report, Future Governance Arrangements for NSW Health, that BHI is recognised as the "primary source of quality information to the community, healthcare professionals and policymakers". Since then we have continued to grow and develop.
In 2012, the management of the NSW Patient Survey Program was transferred to BHI from the NSW Ministry of Health.
Our second Strategic Plan 2015-2019 builds on the earlier successes of BHI and foresees further expansion of the breadth and depth of topics BHI will report on, along with ongoing enhancements to our range of information products.
